Oil Red O

Originally formed in 1998 as a four piece called Alnico. I recorded their first demo at the Forge with Kev Burton which you can hear here.

Ideas changed and Glenister P. James moved on. Brother Charles moved to 2nd guitar from drums and I stepped in behind the kit. After a few gigs and a couple of recording sessions, bass man Luke Hall moved on, leaving the trio to steam on.

Taking influence from various corners of the US post rock movement, the band played with the likes of Doves, Penthouse, Dianogah, Billy Mahonie, Delgados and recorded a session with Kev Burton for their one and only single.

Black vinyl 7"single. 2 (of 4) tracks recorded by Kev Burton at The Forge in North Norfolk. Mastered at The Premises, Hackney.

The artwork evolved from the Wedding Present George Best album cover. Best was David Gedge's hero and we thought we'd simply do the same. Charles chose Peter Cook, I chose Iain Banks and Darren chose Gerhard Richter.

Horseworld, named after an Italian pornographic magazine featuring 2 women and 1 horse, smuggled in to Blighty by an Air Force chum.

Cutshaw, inspired by the film The Ninth Configuration. Samples of Captain Billy Cutshaw.

The SheikOil Red O
00:00 / 03:40

The Sheik is referring to GG Allin and becomes quite animated.

LucanOil Red O
00:00 / 05:32

I thought this was a reference to an old kids' tv programme but it may well be Lord Lucan. The chap talking was a blind piano tuner who had become deaf.

CamarthenOil Red O
00:00 / 04:23

I don't know if this was Carmarthen (Welsh town) or Carnarvon (Lord, Egyptologist). Either way, it was quite a tune to play. Nice nod to Macca too.
